Ten Ideas for a More Sustainable Lifestyle.

If you think this means using jute bags and eating tofu, don’t worry! Sustainable living isn’t necessarily about giving up the finer things in life. Here are 10 suggestions for you to try today.

  • One fine day, Superman will land on the chariot atop Brandenburg Gate and save us all. Yea, right. And yet there is a superpower that can make everything better: the ability to persuade millions of normal people to switch to sustainable living. After all, if everybody does it, then the sky’s the limit! Here are our top tips for more sustainability in your life.

  • Girl holds apple in hand and smiles at her mother. Buying locally can also be really fun - go directly to the farmer.

    1. Avoid foods with plastic packaging

Some supermarkets out there sell nothing but unpackaged foods. If there isn’t one near you, you can still do your bit by buying products in sustainable packaging.

    2. Eat something other than meat for a change

It’s nice to try something different every once in a while. Not to leave a bad taste in the mouth, but research from the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) and the non-profit organisation GRAIN shows that together, the world's top five meat and dairy corporations are now responsible for more annual greenhouse gas emissions than Exxon, Shell or BP.

    3. Eat local, natural foods

Many processed foods are transported halfway around the world before ending up on your plate. The alternative: only put locally sourced, organic foods in your shopping basket.

  • 4. Only buy food you’re actually going to eat

Approximately 30% of the food we produce is wasted.

    5. Switch to a bank that funds sustainable projects

Your bank invests the money sitting in your account in various schemes. A few banks now specialise in sustainable and social projects.

  • Little girl walking in front of a solar plant with balloons in her hand. Green electricity is a great alternative to conventional electricity providers.

    6. Trade in your vehicle for an electric car

Zero emissions and excellent vehicle dynamics from the moment you set off. Driving an electric car makes sense and is fun, too.

Tip: A Webasto wallbox for home charging is energy-saving and also super easy to use.

    7. Switch to green energy

It sounds laborious but it’s not. Invest an hour of your time in researching and switching suppliers – you’ll never have to think about it again after that.

    8. Opt for a parking heater

Give the environment a helping hand: a parking heater can reduce an engine’s hydrocarbon emissions by up to 80% and carbon monoxide emissions by up to 60%. If you’re interested in finding out more, Webasto offers the Webasto Pure parking heater for electric cars and the Thermo Top Evo for vehicles with a combustion engine.

  • Woman on bully in the middle of nature. It does not always have to be the flight - even nearby destinations have their appeal.

    9. Repair broken things rather than buying new

We live in a throw-away society, where people buy new at the drop of a hat. It’s more sustainable to check if the item can be repaired.
Tip: visit a repair café for tools and assistance from volunteer helpers.

    10. Rethink your attitude towards flying

Want to jet off to Rome for the weekend because flights are cheap? Unfortunately, doing so pumps unnecessary emissions into the atmosphere. Popping to your local Italian restaurant for an evening is much better for the environment.

We hope these ten points have inspired you to take action. Even if you only put three of these suggestions into action, the world will still be a slightly better place for it.
